Although it’s very likely you’ve heard of breast implants, you may have never heard of autologous fat grafting for breast augmentation. A simpler, and accurate, name for this procedure is fat transfer, and it’s becoming an increasingly popular option.

About
As the name implies, when you have a fat transfer, Dr. Vu removes fat from one area of your body and places it in another — in this case, your breasts. The fat is removed through liposuction, and may come from your hips, buttocks, belly, or other area.
Once the fat is removed, it’s liquified, and then injected into your breasts in order to make them larger. The result is a natural-looking and -feeling bust.
Benefits
You essentially have two procedures in one process. The liposuction removes unwanted fat, and the augmentation gives you the shapely, perfectly-sized breasts you want.
You’ll be recovering from both procedures, but recovery is generally less onerous following a fat transfer than following implants, because fat transfer is less invasive.
No foreign materials
With implants, whether they are silicone or saline, you have synthetic material in your body. Implants are considered safe overall, but there’s risk involved.
With fat transfer, no foreign material is introduced.
Your body produced the fat that is injected to increase your breast size, so the likelihood that you may have an allergic reaction to it is very low.
No leaking
One of the reasons some women choose saline implants instead of silicone is the fact that there’s a risk your implants could leak into your body. With a fat transfer, leakage isn’t a problem.
Some of the fat may be reabsorbed by your body after it’s injected, but it’s harmless. Dr. Vu may discuss injecting more fat than you think you need to insure you end up with breasts the size and shape you want, even if some of the fat is reabsorbed.
The size of the fat cells themselves may change if you gain or lose weight, but again, this is a normal process and nothing remotely dangerous.
More freedom to sculpt the look you want
With a fat transfer, you gain the additional benefit of Dr. Vu’s unmatched sculpting skill. She can use the liquified fat to sculpt exactly the look you want.
With implants, you choose the size and shape you want, and though there are many options, you still have something that’s more or less off-the-shelf. With fat transfer, you can have custom sculpted breasts that fit your body perfectly.
One of the many reasons women who choose fat transfer for breast augmentation is that they want a more natural look than implants allow.
